IEU Middle Leadership Program – Session 2/6: Managing challenging conversations

An exciting opportunity exists for IEU members to participate in the new Middle Leadership Program (MLP), a collaboration with the Teacher Learning Network and The University of Melbourne.

The MLP runs over 18 months, (June 2024 to November 2025), culminating in a Professional Certificate of Middle Leadership. Courses are delivered online and in person, offering 30 hours of professional learning.

The MLP, which incurs no direct costs, will develop the skills of educators and build a generation of sophisticated school leaders.

Session 2/6: Managing challenging conversations

This practical, interactive masterclass is designed for middle leaders in education who seek to enhance their skills in initiating and holding successful challenging conversations. This will be a practical session in which you will be encouraged to trial the framework during the session.

Participants will:

  • Deepen awareness of the common obstacles to challenging conversations.

  • Develop sentence starters and prompts that help you have challenging conversations in a clear and authentic way.

  • Learn strategies for helping yourself to be calm, clear, kind and confident.

  • Explore and practice a courageous conversation framework for addressing issues collaboratively.

  • Strengthen their self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

By the end of the session, leaders will be equipped to navigate difficult conversations with empathy and effectiveness.

Presenter: Katrina Bourke
