The New York Times has defined toxic masculinity as a narrow and repressive description of manhood, designating manhood as defined by violence, sex, status and aggression. It’s the cultural ideal of manliness, where strength is everything while emotions are a weakness’ (2017). There have been examples of toxic masculinity on display in education and the broader community. As teachers and unionists we have a responsibility to engage in this conversation and then take steps in our schools to respond. This session will open that conversation and suggest some steps that teachers can take in response to expressions of toxic masculinity.
