As union members in education we have a critical role in shaping the community conversation about important social issues. 'Issues that Matter' is a series of conversations for IEU members, led by experts, to stimulate your thinking and challenge you, your union sub-branch and school to contribute to a more informed community. The focus of this conversation will be access to leadership roles for women in Catholic and Independent schools. Women are 82% of the primary teaching workforce and 67% of the primary principal roles; and 61% of the the secondary teaching workforce and 40% of secondary principals. Why? Are there personal or structural issues or a power dynamic in schools that mean that women are a smaller percentage of principals than they represent in the overall teaching workforce? What might need to change to open up leadership roles for women? There will be a moderated discussion with experts and you will be encouraged to contribute to the conversation.
