Protected Action Ballot Order application submitted for Tasmanian Catholic education!

Industrial action has always been an important tool for workers to achieve decent outcomes on pay and conditions. But gone are the days when workers could down tools with impunity. After decades of anti-worker changes to industrial laws, it takes determination, persistence and a lot of hoop-jumping to win the right to take industrial action.

The IEU is excited to announce that on 31 July, we submitted a Protected Action Ballot Order (PABO) application to the Fair Work Commission, as the next step in our campaign for a fair Agreement for IEU members working in Tasmanian Catholic education.

It might seem a technical milestone to celebrate, but this filing gets us closer to being able to take actions which offer more leverage to workers sick of waiting for a deal that brings them up to speed with state colleagues.

We expect the Fair Work Commission to decide on our application within the next few days – and if successful it will allow us to appoint an independent organisation to run a ballot of all IEU members employed in Tasmanian Catholic education to determine whether they wish to have the right to take protected industrial action.

We’ve sought for the ballot to include a wide range of potential actions for members to vote on. What’s important to remember is that voting in favour of each action does not mean we will proceed with it, it means that we can do so.

Crucially, only IEU members get to vote in the PABO, and only IEU members have the right to take protected industrial action.

As we move forward in this campaign, we need all IEU members working in Tasmanian Catholic education to:

✅ Ensure your details are up-to-date in Member Access
✅ Recruit, recruit, recruit!
✅ VOTE YES to taking industrial action.
