Important IEU wins on workload and training at St John’s College Preston
IEU members at St John’s College have secured the right for teachers to leave school grounds when they have no scheduled class duties — an important step in addressing workload concerns.
Rep Chiara Costanzo says securing this right was “an important recognition of teacher workload concerns”.
“It reinforced that our school sees and values the voice of its staff, acknowledging the immense hours teachers dedicate outside of the scheduled work day. This decision further fostered a greater sense of trust between staff and leadership, ensuring that teachers feel supported in managing their professional and personal responsibilities. This is a great step forward!”
Members also secured dedicated time-off for Reps to attend training, a move Chiara says “reinforces the value of having a strong advocate for staff, fostering a positive workplace culture and strengthening the overall work environment.”
These reforms set a powerful example for other schools. When teachers are supported, they can bring their best to the classroom — benefiting students, parents, staff, and the entire school community.
