IEU Awards 2023: Richard Linton, Parade College

Every IEU member deserves an award for helping educate the next generation in ever more demanding workplaces, and Reps, who sacrifice their time so selflessly, always deserve commendation.

But there are some extra special stars like Richard who we wanted to highlight for their outstanding work this year.

Richard Linton accepts his award from Organiser Earl James.

Richard became aware of gendered violence risks to women at Parade College. Following this suspicion, he conducted research that provided a picture of the gendered violence that women were suffering. Richard presented his research to management and was consulted on a range of control measures that have improved the situation. Richard continues to monitor conditions to ensure that the situation improves.

Health and safety is a huge issue in our schools, and the IEU is keen to help change perceptions that experiences of gendered violence are “part of the job”.

To help affect this change, the IEU is producing a guide to minimising work-related violence in schools, after conducting a thorough review of existing workplace safety guidelines in the non-government sector. You can read excerpts from the guide in the current edition of The Point, available online here.

Richard is one of the IEU members at the vanguard of this push to call out psychosocial hazards in our workplaces. His courage and compassion is exemplary.
