AEU/IEU 2022 Student Teacher Conference: Diversify your teaching practice!

AEU/IEU 2022 Student Teacher Conference: Diversify your teaching practice!

Your union is a place for everybody! Union business is not only about you as a worker but also about what you bring as a unique individual – diversity is our strength. You are the union, and the union movement does not leave anyone behind. It is the community you can turn to throughout your career for support as a worker and educator, and draw strength from to have your voice heard.

Our conference keynote speakers, Dr Al Fricker and Belinda Webb, will provide you with evidence-based practical teaching strategies tailored to a diverse range of students. Our panellists, stallholders and comrades will share their commitment to taking action on diverse union issues, helping you on your way to becoming a well-rounded educator. Let’s reconnect again and build our community!

Registrations close 9.00am, Monday 27 June.

Venue: AEU Victoria, 126 Trenerry Crescent, Abbotsford, Victoria, 3067

Session overview

Keynote speaker 1: Dr Al Fricker
We are excited to welcome back Al Fricker to this conference space. His session will focus on how to decolonise your classroom, including practical strategies around how to incorporate this into your toolkit of diversity.

Diversity in Australian classrooms is not a new phenomenon. As the Australian community has welcomed diverse peoples, we have also seen diversity grow in our classrooms. This is overwhelmingly a positive, as the more diverse and differentiated the teaching and learning process is, the better all students do. This presentation explores how decolonising the classroom and incorporating First Nations contexts can contribute to supporting the outcomes of this diverse student body. It provides a practical approach that can begin to overcome colonisation, embrace and celebrate diversity, and ensure success for all.

Keynote Speaker 2: Belinda Webb
The focus on the session is working with kids with diverse learning needs and/or learning disabilities, with a particular focus on ASD and ADHD.

Belinda is an Education Support Specialist at Covenant College, currently working to support families and teachers working with students with disabilities or additional needs. As part of her current role and as a trained Special Education Teacher – and previous roles as a Behaviour Coach at a Special Developmental school, as well as Behaviour Consultant at The Resource – she works to support all students, including students with additional needs or disabilities.

Q&A Panel: ‘Voices of the union - How to get active’
This panel is made up of a broad range of activists who are connected to core union values through their work. Their methods of activism within the education space help build the world that they want to see. This is your opportunity to hear their strong voices on union-wide issues and learn how to best empower unique perspectives as a future educator.
