Commercial publishers have supplied detailed step by step programs and resources to guide primary schools in the implementation of their literacy programs. It is important that teachers using these resources continue to exercise their professional judgement and expertise. No resource, however intricate in its design and detail, can replace the deep knowledge of the student that a teacher holds nor the understanding of the context in which the teacher is working. In this session the presenter, a classroom teacher and researcher, will explore the teacher as 'curriculum-maker' and how teacher knowledge and skills can be used in conjunction with commercial programs.
